“We need more citizen legislators, not career politicians.”

U.S. Senator David Perdue (R-GA) continues push for a Constitutional Amendment to impose term limits on Members of Congress.

“We need more citizen legislators, not career politicians. The rise of career politicians has created the constant gridlock crippling Washington,” said Senator Perdue. “Term limits for Members of Congress are long overdue and still one on my top priorities in the United States Senate. As the outsider in the belly of the beast, I firmly believe term limits will help keep elected officials focused on getting results, and less on their own political self-interests.”

Background:

  • Senator Perdue first introduced term limits on January 6, 2015 and has since introduced this proposal in every Congress.
  • In July 2015, Senator Perdue wrote an op-ed for the Augusta Chronicle calling for the return of citizen legislators.
  • In October 2016, Senator Perdue penned an op-ed in the Daily Signal pushing for elected officials to focus on results rather than elections.

  1. Sen. Perdue has it exactly right. Unfortunately, the chances of the US Senate and House passing such legislation is about zero, null, nichts, nada, zip. The only path to term limits is a constitutional amendment which is proceeding slowly through the various states. If Georgia’s long-term Speaker Ralston (chasing his hero Tom Murphy’s record) would deign to support the Article V Convention bill this year in Georgia, maybe term limits has a chance.
