In March, the Georgia PTA announced the state winners of the Reflections Arts Program, and out of the 11 winners from Glynn County Schools, Glynn Middle School eighth-grader, Griffin Lee, advanced to the national competition for his literary entry titled, “Aurora Borealis.” As of Wednesday, May 1, Griffin is a National PTA Reflections winner, having earned a $200 Young Artist Scholarship, a silver medal and a certificate of excellence. His work will be featured in the National PTA’s traveling exhibition.
Griffin isn’t the only big winner of the competition. Brunswick High student, Emily Grace Weaver, won at the state level for her artwork titled, “Look Within,” which will be the image for next year’s Georgia PTA Reflections poster.
The National PTA Reflections Arts Program is America’s oldest and largest arts education program of its kind. The program was developed in 1969 by Colorado’s PTA President Mary Lou Anderson, who wanted to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves. Since then, the Reflections Arts program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork. Each year, students in grades Pre-K through 12th are recognized for bringing the theme to life through Film Production, Dance Choreography, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts. The entries are judged against peers’ artwork, progressing from school, county, state and national levels of competition.
The 2018-19 theme was “Heroes Around Me.” Out of the 118 entries submitted at the county level in November, 72 of those entries advanced to the state contest. While all 72 entries were on display at the Ritz Theater during the month of March, only 11 winners emerged from the state competition. They included the following:
