The Trion Middle School Wrestling Team ended their season this past weekend with their first North Georgia Athletic Conference (NGAC) Traditional Tournament Championship. On Saturday, the varsity team scores were: 1. Trion-244, 2. Ringgold-183, 3. Dade-150, 4. Saddle Ridge- 121. This was the final leg in completing the NGAC title sweep for the Dogs after being crowned the NGAC season champions and capturing the NGAC Duals Tournament championship a week prior.
Individual champions in the varsity tournament were Crawford Lee (8th), Toby Maddux (7th), Logan Eller (8th), and Johnny Vasquez (8th). This was the second time that Lee and Eller have captured this award in their middle school careers. Toby Maddux not only won the league, but was also awarded the Most Outstanding Wrestler (MOW) award. Jason Jenkins (6th), Cohen Blaschke(7th), Gus Hames (8th), and Cayse Pelico (8th) all placed second, Lane Harris (6th), Carter Conley (8th), and Colby Evans(7th) all finished third, and Logan Potts (6th) and Lance Maynard (7th) took home fourth place finishes.
The Junior Varsity tournament was held on Friday and saw many young wrestlers get to show that the Middle School wrestling team will still be competitive for at least the next couple of years. Landon Dixson, Colton Sanford, Texas Jones, and Julio Castenado all placed first in their respected weight classes. Price Wilson and Bryan Zepeda placed 2nd, Ben Perry, Sergio Ramos, and Jayson Ramirez came away with third, and Colin Buster, Zach Camp, and Tyler Malone brought home fourth.
This may have been the end of the road for the NGAC season, but the TMS wrestling team’s season is far from over. After Christmas break, the team will regroup and get ready for the Georgia Middle School State Duals on January 12. Last year, the dogs fought hard to a third place finish, but look to improve on that place this year. The tournament showcases 24 of the best wrestling teams in the state of Georgia all under the same roof and will be held at Gilmer County High School.
